This morning on the Today Show on NBC they ran a story on the controversy regarding Starbucks and their red "Christmas Cup." Turns out Starbucks vice president Jeffrey Fields said the company "wanted to usher in the holidays with a purity of design that welcomes all of our stories."
Some people are irate, including many Christians. I admit when I first heard of the red cups, I was exasperated. I figured, here is another example of a company saying they don't want to offend anyone, and in the process offends a large portion of society. Namely Christians.
But then I got to thinking. What shoud I expect? Starbucks is not a church. They are not even a religious organization (to my knowledge). They are a business, designed to make money. And they are good at it. So, why would I think they would do anything else but make coffee (and, by the way, provide excellent customer service in the process) and follow the way this world is going?
Paul wrote in 2 Timothy 3:1-5 "But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away!" The world killed the prophets. The world killed the apostles. The world Killed Jesus Christ! Can we expect a parade from them? Or even a "Merry Christmas" printed on the side of our coffee cups?
Probably not. So, if you want to boycott Starbucks for their red cups, that's fine. But, if you feel that strongly, be sure to share the gospel whenever and wherever you can. Because if Starbucks won't say "Merry Christmas!" on their cups, it's up to us as Christians to pick up the slack.
If you decide to keep patronizing them, you could do what my wife is doing. She puts "Merry Christmas!" stickers on her plain red cup. People will notice if they are the type to notice that kind of thing at all.
My $.02 worth.
