Billy Sunday once said- “Temptation is the devil looking through a keyhole. Yielding is opening the door and inviting him in.” In Job 1:10 Satan says God put a hedge around Job to keep him safe. I like that idea. Imagine this: the Devil wants to get to you, but God puts a hedge around you to protect you. And no one can get through that hedge unless God allows it. Which, from time to time (as tough as it is to hear), He does. There are times God allows what we perceive as bad things to pass through the hedge. And we cry out to Him. Maybe not at first. Often at first all we do is complain. But eventually we cry to Him for help. And He answers. And our walk with HIm is stronger because of it.
So, with all that in mind, there is one warning we must heed: as Ephesians 4:27 says (in the NIV)- "Do not give the devil a foothold." I liken it to this: God puts the hedge around us to protect us. Satan comes knocking with a temptation he knows we have a hard time resisting. Now, we are too smart to just open the gate and let him in. That would be wrong. So, we open the gate, walk to where he is, and give him a "boost" over the hedge.
Sound crazy? It is! But that is just what we do when we give in to temptation. We help out the devil. Trust me, this is one of the worst things we can do. Satan is so good at what he does that he gets us to participate by helping him. Even though we know it's wrong!
So, what should we do when he comes knocking? Remember Scripture, such as James 4:7- "Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you." Submit to God. Resist the devil. Not the other way around. Too often we submit to the devil and resist God. Don't do that! Now, notice the order here: Submit to God first, and resist the devil second. Try resisting the devil before you submit to God, and you are trying to resist the devil in your own strength. If you do that, you will fail every time. Submit to God first so the strength you have to resist the devil is God's strength.
This is what the Bible says to do. I guarantee it will work if we do what it says.
In His love,
