1 John 1:5-10
v.5- John and the other disciples heard a message from Jesus.
And now John knows it’s time to share that message with the world.
“God is light”- “light”- “phos”- “God is light because light has that subtle, pure, brilliant quality.”
1 Peter 2:9
1 Thessalonians 5:5 John 8:12 Matthew 5:14
“light”- Webster’s- “something that makes vision possible.”
Reminds me of the man Jesus healed of blindness in John 9:25- “One thing I know: that though I was blind, now I see.”
“in Him is no darkness at all.”- Think of that.
Complete, absolute, purity.
v.6- We can’t just say we have fellowship with God.
We must actually have that fellowship.
“walk in darkness”- This doesn’t mean the occasional sin we as Christians commit, but rather a pattern of living.
2 Corinthians 6:14
“we lie and do not practice the truth.”- Here is the amazing part of all this.
John is talking about Christians here.
v.7- “But if we walk in the light as He is in the light,”- A lot of Christians do walk in the light of their relationship with God.
“we have fellowship with one another,”- Not only fellowship with God, but with each other.
“and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.”- “cleanses”- “katharizo”- “in a moral sense, to free from guilt of sin, to purify.”
What the blood of Jesus Christ did on the cross is this: it freed us from the guilt of sin, and it purified us.
Jesus said on the cross in John 19:30- “It is finished!” TETELESTI!
But, also: “cleanses”- “katharizo”- (“kä-thä-rē'-zō”)- PRESENT TENSE!
We are continually cleansed by the blood.
v.8- “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.”- One of the teachings of the Gnostics, if you remember, was that all matter was evil, and all spirit was pure.
v.9- “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”- What this means is we need to take the forgiveness of sin God offers and use it!
v.10- “If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.”- Even though we know what that the Bible says about sin:
Romans 3:23- “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God”
If we say we haven’t sinned, and God clearly says we have, we are calling God a liar.
Numbers 23:19- “God is not a man, that He should lie,”
Hebrews 6:18- “it is impossible for God to lie,”
Not only do we make Him a liar, but even worse:
“His word is not in us.”
We desperately need the word of God.
Psalm 119:11- “Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You.”
