1 John 2:15-17
v.15- “Do not love the world or the things in the world.”- We’re going to start by defining what John meant by “the world”.
1 Timothy 6:17 John 3:16
“the world”- “kosmos”- “The whole circle of earthly goods, endowments, riches, advantages, pleasures, etc.; which, although hollow and frail and fleeting, stir desire, seduce from God, and are obstacles to the cause of Christ.”
“the world”- is also the community of sinful humanity that is united in rebellion against God.
“love”- “to take pleasure in the thing, prize it above other things, be unwilling to abandon it, or do without it.”
“If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.”- As a Christian, having the love of the Father in us is so important.
But here John says if we love the world above our love for our Father in heaven, we do not have the love of the Father in us.
It’s very simple: our hearts are only so big.
Now John lists what has been called, “The Trinity of Evil”—
v.16- “For all that is in the world—”- All that is sinful.
1) “the lust of the flesh,”- The “flesh” does not mean our skin, or our bodies.
Flesh is the nature we receive in our physical birth; spirit is the nature we receive in the second birth.
“lust”- “desire, craving, longing, desire for what is forbidden, lust.”
“lust” is a word which describes the emotions of the soul, the natural tendency toward things evil.
2) “the lust of the eyes,”- Do you realize that the eyes can have an appetite?
With our eyes we can start down a path of sin that can lead to destruction.
3) “and the pride of life—”- We as Christians know God has a problem with our pride.
“life”- “Bios”- refers to the life of the physical body and is where we get the word biology.
Satan has been using these tactics against us for a long, long time.
How long? Turn in your Bibles to Genesis 3:1.
The same 3 tactics- “the lust of the flesh,”- (So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food)
“the lust of the eyes,”- (that it was pleasant to the eyes)
“and the pride of life—”- (and a tree desirable to make one wise)
Satan is also caught in Scripture using these tactics in Matthew 4.
“is not of the Father but is of the world.”- God has nothing to do with “the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—” other than to send Jesus Christ to die in our place because we are neck-deep in them.
James 1:13 James 1:14
Matthew 6:13 2 Peter 2:9
v.17- “And the world is passing away,”- Two ways to look at this.
1) We do not live here forever.
2) This planet, as permanent as it seems, is not going to last forever.
2 Peter 3:10 Revelation 21:1
“and the lust of it;”- “lust” is a word which describes the emotions of the soul, the natural tendency towards things evil.
“but he who does the will of God abides forever.”- If you are a Christian, one who has confessed that Jesus Christ is your Lord and Savior, and you believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will live “forever.”
