1 John 2:12-14
1st stage of spiritual life: v.12- “I write to you, little children,”- Remember, John is not referring to little children in terms of age, but spiritual maturity.
“little children”- “is a term of affection by a teacher to his disciples under circumstances requiring a tender appeal.”
Galatians 4:19 John 13:33
“Because your sins are forgiven you for His name’s sake.”- Because our sins are forgiven.
Psalm 32:1 Isaiah 43:25 Ephesians 1:7 Jude 24,25
We start out as “little children” when we’re new Christians.
That is a lot to know about and to ponder, but God wants us to move on in our faith.
At the end of v.13- The “little children” John used here is a different Greek word than in v.12, and the word he used here refers to little children under authority, who are in need of discipline to train them in righteousness.
But these “little children” haven’t grown in their faith much at all since getting saved.
“Because you have known the Father.”- The “knowing the Father” John is speaking of is that initial knowing all new believers have.
2nd stage of spiritual life: in the middle of v.13- “I write to you, young men,”- I believe they do a lot of the work in the church.
“Because you have overcome the wicked one.”- They are engaged in battle with “the wicked one”, Satan.
Yes, we have “overcome” the wicked one because Jesus Christ overcame him when He died on the cross and rose from the dead.
1 John 5:4
In order to share in the victory Jesus has over the wicked one, we have to be on His team.
Romans 8:37 John 16:33
In the middle of v.14- “I have written to you, young men,”- Same young men as mentioned in v.13. The workhorses.
“Because you are strong,”- Does John mean the “young men” are strong by themselves?
2 Corinthians 13:4 1 Corinthians 1:25 Psalm 28:7 Joshua 1:9
“and the word of God abides in you,”- So, the young men have the word of God abiding, or living, in them.
John 8:31,32 Matthew 4:4 Psalm 1:2 Luke 11:28 Matthew 24:25
“And you have overcome the wicked one.”- Why did John mention overcoming the wicked one again?
Because of how they overcome the wicked one.
They do it…with the word of God.
Ephesians 6:17 Hebrews 4:12
3rd stage of spiritual life: at the beginning of v.13- “I write to you, fathers,”- “of Christians, as those who through Christ have been exalted to a specially close and intimate relationship with God, and who no longer dread him as a stern judge of sinners, but revere him as their reconciled and loving Father.”
“Because you have known Him who is from the beginning.”- There is something to be said for time on the job.
John is talking about knowing Jesus Christ, “who is from the beginning.”
And at the beginning of v.14, John repeats this- “I have written to you, fathers, Because you have known Him who is from the beginning.”- Why did John repeat this?
Because knowing Jesus is what it’s all about.
1 Corinthians 2:2- “For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.”
